Top 5 Dive Spots on Bonaire

Bonaire is often referred to as the “diving capital of the world” for a reason. The island is a dream for divers and snorkelers, with crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and an incredible variety of marine life. Whether you’re a first-time diver or a seasoned pro, Bonaire has something for everyone. Here are the must-visit spots:

1000 Steps

One of Bonaire’s most famous dive and snorkel spots, featuring stunning coral reefs and a good chance to spot sea turtles. Don’t worry about the name – it doesn’t feel like 1000 steps, and the journey down is absolutely worth it. Ideal for snorkelers and divers alike.

Hilma Hooker

This sunken cargo ship is a highlight for wreck divers. Located at a depth of 18 to 30 metres, it’s covered in colourful coral and teeming with marine life. The Hilma Hooker offers a thrilling and unique experience not to be missed.

Salt Pier

Unlike other dive sites on Bonaire, Salt Pier is characterised by its underwater pillars covered with coral and schools of fish. The light streaming through the structures creates a magical atmosphere, perfect for underwater photography. Sea turtles are often spotted here too!

Bari Reef

Known as one of the most biodiverse sites in the world, Bari Reef is a haven for fish enthusiasts. Whether you’re snorkelling or diving, there’s always something new to discover here.

Angel City

Angel City stands out with its double reef structure. The reef is teeming with life and a visual delight for snorkelers and divers. Its clear waters and abundant coral make it a favourite among visitors.

Why Bonaire is the Best Choice for Divers

In addition to these five locations, Bonaire boasts over 80 dive sites, each with its own unique appeal. The island is committed to marine conservation, ensuring the reefs and marine life remain in pristine condition. Remember to arrange your Stinapa Fee online beforehand. This supports the protection of Bonaire’s stunning flora and fauna and serves as your entry ticket to Park Slagbaai.

Top 5 Sightseeings on Bonaire

Bonaire is a dream destination for nature and history enthusiasts. From rugged landscapes and unique wildlife to thought-provoking historical sites, the island offers something for everyone. Here are the must-see sightseeings:

Washington Slagbaai National Park

This nature park is an adventure in itself, featuring rugged cliffs, serene bays, and secluded beaches. It’s the perfect place for hiking, birdwatching, or escaping the crowds. Iguanas and flamingos are common sights, and the views are breathtaking. Don’t forget your camera! Be sure to purchase your Stinapa pass in advance, and note that the large tour takes about two hours by car. Check with your rental company if your 4×4 is allowed in the park, as not all rentals permit access.

Klein Bonaire

A small, uninhabited island just off the coast, Klein Bonaire is surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs rich in marine life. It’s one of the best spots for snorkelling or diving. Bring your own food and drinks and enjoy a day on its tranquil, white beaches. For private trips or a tour, contact Hans, who has access to a speedboat and is a certified powerboat instructor.

The Salt Flats

The salt flats of Bonaire are an iconic part of the island. The expansive plains with pink lakes and white salt mountains are not only highly photogenic but also important for salt production. The landscape is almost otherworldly and gives you a sense of being in a truly unique place.

Flamingo Sanctuary bij Pekelmeer

Pekelmeer is one of the best places in the world to see flamingos. Hundreds of these pink birds gather here to breed. It’s an impressive sight, and photography enthusiasts can capture some stunning shots.

Historic Slave Huts

Along Bonaire’s coast, you’ll find the small white and yellow slave huts that serve as a reminder of a difficult period in the island’s history. Seeing how small and simple these huts are is a powerful experience that gives insight into Bonaire’s past.

Why Bonaire is More Than a Beach Destination

Bonaire isn’t just about sun, sea, and sand. The island offers a unique blend of breathtaking nature and rich cultural history. Whether you want to hike, snorkel, or learn more about its history, Bonaire has it all – even an 18-hole golf course, where grass is scarce, but it’s a full-length course worth playing.
